If you've been in the airsoft community or the civilian LARPing community, night vision has probably come up as a piece of equipment many try to justify forking out the cost of used car to wear on their head. And you've likely heard people mention the green or white phosphor preference. In this post we will discuss the history of night vision devices an the difference between white and green phosphor.
The Human Eye And Early Night Vision
Before we can understand the difference between white and green phosphor, we need to understand a bit of history and human biology. Green phosphor was originally developed with green phosphor (you might have even heard the term Gen 1/Generation 1). The reason behind this is in the way the human eye functions. Human eyes contain two types of cells: rods and cones.
Rods work well in low light settings which manage the difference between light and shadow. While cones are responsible for the color input which struggle in low light environments.
Human eyes perceive more shads of green than any color as an evolutionary trait which helped us hunt and gather. And this is why early night vision was developed using green phosphor to establish better low light differentiation.
The Evolution of White Phosphor
Developed in the late 20th century and gaining popularity in the last decade. Users of white phosphor have argued its superiority over its predecessor. Claiming that it offers improved contrast in darker environments. The reason for this claim is that it presents a more neutral white and black image that activate more rods in the eye increasing contrast and perception. Additionally it is claimed to be less strain on the eye over longer usage reducing fatigue.
The Benefits of Green Phosphor
Green phosphor night vision still has many advantages. Ever hear about the reason why pirates wear an eye patch, is so that their eye can adjust quicker to the darkening night sky? As previously described the human eye sees more shades of green than any other color, while with green phosphor and a darker aperture. When it comes time to flip up your night vision, your eyes will adjust faster to the natural ambient light.
The financial gateway to night vision has always been a barrier for most, especially when you consider support costs to run them like mount, batteries, helmet, etc. Green phosphor night vision helps alleviate some of that burden as its technology becomes older causing the price for it to come down.
Anything is Better Than Nothing
Not to be an alarmist, but with the rise in division, looming fear of collapses and everyone becoming their own solider of fortune. Getting your hands on a pair of night vision could be the deciding factor for desperate night navigation, surviving an engagement or egress.
Remember - You cannot fight what you cannot see.
